Coin Collecting Supplies
You might be surprised to know that you do not need a lot of coin collecting supplies in order to start a coin collection.
Coin Collecting Supplies
In fact, many novice collectors start off with a simple shoebox or paper bag to store their coins. Of course, this is not an ideal method for storing coins, especially ones that are more valuable. At the very minimum, you want to store your coins in a way that they won’t get lost, damaged or dirty. Some beginners place each coin in a plastic bag or envelope and then store in some sort of container.
If you are ready to get serious about your coin collection, you will want to invest in more advanced coin collecting supplies. One possibility is a coin album. Some are designed to fit a particular series of coins. These usually are made so that you can view both the front and the back of the coin without having to remove it from the album. Some of the more expensive albums have protection for the coins built in, so that they will be even safer. Similar to an album is a coin folder. Coin folders are typically made for a particular coin set. For instance, a popular coin folder is one that holds the state quarters. This folder has a spot for each state quarter to be displayed. While these folders are an inexpensive way to display your coins, they offer little in the way of protection.
For coins that you want to protect, you should place them in individual coin holders. These vary in protection as well as price. Coin flips are an inexpensive way to store your coins or to place your coins in if you are sending them somewhere to be examined. However, they aren’t recommended if you are planning on storing your coins for the long term. If you do use a coin flip, you should make sure that you use one that is made out of material that is suitable for archival purposes. This will help maintain the quality of your coin. Some coin holders are made with an inner polyethylene ring which allows the coin to sit snugly within the coin holder. They are designed to keep as much air away from the coin as possible. They are a relatively inexpensive option unless your coin collection is quite large.

Many coin collectors also invest in some sort of system to track their coins and their values. This can be as simple as a spiral notebook, however, many collectors have turned to coin collecting software. The software can be quite helpful when starting a coin collection because most packages will tell you coin values, help identify coins, and help track your personal collection. Most packages also offer add-ons which can expand the reach of the software to include different sets of coins.
Coin collecting is a hobby that can be as simple or complex as you wish to make it. While you do not need to invest in coin collecting supplies to get started, most coin collectors will soon want to purchase a few items to better preserve their collection. One note though, if you are in possession of coins that are quite valuable, it is always best to contact a professional to determine the best methods of storing the coin. Always err on the side of caution when dealing with the rarer coins.
