Before a value can be placed on a coin, it must be graded depending on its condition. Coins that are damaged, discolored or otherwise harmed will be worth little, except in the case of exceptionally rare coins. There are standards for how a coin is graded, and it depends on the individual coin and its features. There are many guides which can help a collector grade a coin. Dealers and coin collecting groups are also good resources for those who want to know the value of a coin.
There is also the issue of what is considered rare. In some instances, there are only a few coins existing in the entire world of a particular mint. These coins are very rare and their value will be exceptionally high. These coins are typically sold by fine auction houses or passed down through inheritances. Some rare coins are also displayed in museums. Coins can also be considered rare when they are less easy to find, but are not that difficult to obtain by collectors who are willing to look.
Some coins which can be found in the United States are quite rare due to special circumstances involving the coin. For instance, the 1943 Lincoln cent was mostly made of steel with a zinc plating. These coins are usually worth around ten cents. However, some of these coins were made out of copper. The ones made from copper are worth between $20,000 and $95,000. The way to tell the difference is to hold the coin to a magnet. The copper coins will not stick to the magnet, but the steel/zinc ones will.

There are also instances where a particular year of the coin is more rare than others. Having a coin from that year will significantly increase the value. The only way of knowing for sure what your coin is worth is to research the value. Coins vary greatly in value even among one denomination. An old dime might be worth very little, but it also might be worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Remember, if you suspect that a coin is rare, take time to protect the coin. For particularly rare coins, you will want to consult an expert to make sure that you are doing what it takes to maintain the value of the coin.
