What is Coin Collecting?

So you want to collect coins but you’re not sure how to get started? First, let’s answer the question, what is coin collecting?

What is Coin Collecting?

Coin collecting is a hobby that has been around for many years. It is believed to have begun as early as the fourteenth century. Coin collecting is just that - collecting or gathering coins either to trade or to keep. The hobby is fascinating enough to be a competitive sport to some, while simple enough to interest even a young child.

There are almost as many reasons to collect coins as there are coins to collect. Many people collect solely for profit. They seek out rare or error coins in the hopes of being able to see them later for a financial windfall. However, this does not make up the bulk of coin collectors. Some collect because they enjoy learning about the history of the different coins. Still others collect coins that carry some sort of sentimental value for them. Some simply collect coins because they think they hold artistic value.

Coin collecting can be a very expensive hobby, but it doesn’t have to be. One of the best things about coin collecting is that you can suit it to your own desires. If you wish to spend quite a bit of money on purchasing quality pieces, there are coin dealers and coin shows in which you can do just that. On the other hand, if you want to pursue coin collecting for other reasons, it can be a very inexpensive thing to do. You can buy coins from the bank or a mint. You can also ask your friends and family (especially those who travel) or grandparents for extra coins they may have lying around. Sometimes these can prove to be quite valuable, or at least very interesting.

Most collectors will look for coins of a certain type. Again, there are many ways in which to do so. You can look for coins by the type of metal they are made which, such as gold or silver coins. This is generally selected by more advanced coin collectors as it is not always an easy task. Other types include searching for coins within a certain time period or coins that come from the same country.

If coin collecting is something you would like to do, the best advice would be to find something about coins that interests you and start collecting. Read books or other articles about coin collecting, join a club, or just start gathering coins.
